The company was established in 1982 as a subsidiary of the Anglo-Alpha Group of Companies; In February 1999, the company became Ikhaya Fundisa Techniskills Academy (IFTA).

In April 2008, IFTA was purchased by new owners and new management took control. The quality and scale of operations changed substantially during this period, which prompted the need to rebrand as the Artisan Training Institute (ATI) in October 2012; During 2012, the trades MC & I, and rigging was launched in Roodepoort.

Since 2008 the company has grown from 17 to 80 staff in 2015.

ATI currently operates from Roodepoort, Crown Mines (in association with Toolquip & Allied), Port Shepstone (in association with Natal Portland Cement) and in Hartbeesfontein. Three additional sites are being planned in South Africa, in conjunction with blue chip customers with whom ATI is proudly associated.

ATI’s training programme
ATI works on an open-entry open-exit basis to of fer clients flexibility. The vast majority of
ATI learners are from corporate entities.

Typically the learning provided by the institute is br oken into three phases:

• Phase 1 comprises approximately 12 to 15 weeks;
• Phase 2 approximately 12 weeks; and
• Phase 3 approximately 8 weeks of institutional training.
Prior to writing trade tests, learners return to the institute for 1 to 2 weeks trade revision,
following which they will write trade tests.
