Motlanalo’s focus is on creating a firm that contributes to the development of professionals and auditors of South Africa and beyond, through teaching and by creating a nurturing and empowering environment for future auditors and accountants, especially those who may not have the opportunity to serve articles in the Big 4 audit environment.

Motlanalo Chartered Accountants and Auditors Incorporated (“Motlanalo”) is a South African Black women-owned professional services firm providing audit, tax and advisory services to the private and public sector.

Founded in 2017 by Chief Executive Officer Koko Khumalo (CA(SA), RA), Motlanalo has, in less than a decade, evolved from a Limpopo-based practice of 12 professionals into a confident, nationally recognised Challenger Firm. Today, the firm employs more than 100 professionals across Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the Western Cape, serving clients in some of South Africa’s most complex and highly regulated sectors, including financial services, mining, real estate, retail, pharma, state-owned entities, higher education institutions, non-profit organisations, and member-based organisations.

That confidence was reinforced in November 2025, when Motlanalo became the first Sub-Saharan African member firm of PA Global, an international network of independent audit and consulting firms operating under a unified global quality and governance framework. The milestone marked more than geographic expansion. It showed that a majority Black women-owned South African firm can meet and exceed international standards for quality, independence, and professional governance, while staying rooted in local purpose and transformation. As a network firm of PA Global, Motlanalo has access to PA Global international quality systems, professional networks, and shared methodologies while enabling clients to benefit from globally recognised audit, tax, and advisory capabilities.

Transforming the audit landscape
Motlanalo has distinguished itself through its focus on developing young Black professionals, creating opportunities for women and building a culture grounded in excellence and purpose. This journey is shaped by Motlanalo’s purpose to develop business professionals and auditors through teaching and by creating a nurturing and empowering environment, its vision to promote Cultural Excellence in Business, and its mission to transform the audit landscape.

The firm entered into a partnership agreement with Ernst & Young (EY) in December 2018, which enabled Motlanalo professionals to be part of EY private sector, complex clients and infrastructure in a quest to help Motlanalo grow beyond its current markets. Motlanalo is also on the Auditor General South Africa’s database of service providers, and a registered office of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Quality services delivered by a values-driven business
As a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor, the firm provides a deep understanding of audit, advisory, and risk management services, helping clients achieve clarity to make strategic business decisions.

Motlanalo is committed to building personable business relationships and delivering excellent outputs for clients, while applying the highest ethical standards.

The firm’s values are the guiding principles that inform our behaviours and actions. Its values are Respect, Understanding, Trust and Accountability; the acronym of these values spells ‘RUTA’ which means ‘To Teach’ in Sepedi. This is core to Motlanalo’s identity and helps employees understand and live the firm’s culture.

In-house training and development
All professional staff attend in-house training and development technical sessions on key and relevant topics, including its annual Smart Start Training Programme for all staff.

Employee Wellness Programme
The firm’s employee wellness aims to support the health and wellness of staff. The firm provides free 24/7 employee wellness support to employees and up to 10 family members by means of a helpline and mobile app. Information on physical, mental and financial wellness is regularly shared with employees through campaigns and webinars.

Empowering women and the youth
As a learning organisation, Motlanalo believes in creating opportunities for growth and development. The majority of the firm’s professionals are women and youth under 35 years. Through our ongoing investment in training, leadership development, and empowerment, Motlanalo is striving to not only transform the audit landscape, but also help build a future where excellence reflects the full potential of South Africa.
